Choosing Domain Names

July 5th, 2012 by

Choosing a domain name is an extremely important first step in developing your online presence. There are a few things to consider when compiling your list of potential domain names. While there are millions of domain names registered, there are still suitable top level domain names available.

Keep it Short

When compiling your initial domain name list, try to make all names as short as possible. Instead of registering the domain name “iknitcoolsweatersandsellthemonline.com”, you might be better served to go with something along the lines of “coolknitsweaters.com”. Short domain names are much easier for visitors to remember, especially if you plan to advertise your website at some point. A short domain name will pay off in the future should you decide to begin advertising your website, especially if you plan to advertise on the radio.

Creativity can pay off

Websites such as Google, Yahoo, and Monster are all proof that you don’t always have to choose a conventional domain name. If you have a unique product or idea, you may be in the position to benefit from choosing a somewhat abstract title for your company and your domain name.

Top level domains are important

Finally, it is also important to remember that on average, potential visitors will be more likely to find your website if you are using a top level .com domain. Take a minute and think about the website addresses of the websites you use most frequently. I would be willing to bet 90% or more of them are top level .com, .net, or .org domain names. Hopefully these three simple reminders will help you in choosing a successful domain name. Don’t forget, a great domain name will get you nothing unless you have a great website to compliment it with!
