Protecting Your Domain Name

July 6th, 2012 by

Good domain names can be an invaluable resource for your business, but if you don’t take certain precautions when registering your domain name you can end up with a lot of hassle down the road. Many website design companies offer domain name registration services for their clients. This service is a great help to clients who aren’t comfortable registering a domain themselves. The problem with such services is that many companies will register your new domain name under their own company name.

Contact Information

When registering a domain name, there are four contact information forms to fill out. These four forms list the Registrant, Administrative, Technical, and Billing Contact information. In most cases, a company registering a domain for you should only be listed as the Technical contact. You, or members of your company, should be listed in the remaining three contact fields. Making sure this information is properly recorded will insure you are able to prove your ownership of the domain should you run into problems with the company who registered your domain.
Failure to follow these steps can often lead to a lot of headaches should you choose to transfer your domain at a later date.

Failure to follow these steps can often lead to a lot of headaches should you choose to transfer your domain at a later date. This year I have had a lot of success getting domains transferred properly for clients, but there is one domain that we have been working to resolve for months. If your company is unable to provide tangible proof of ownership of the domain, it can be a painstaking process to recover your name. Honestly, it can sometimes been impossible.
